Sickle instruments, also called sickle scalers, are hand instruments designed for the effective removal of supragingival tartar, plaque and discoloration. With two cutting edges and a pointed toe, they are particularly suitable for interproximal surfaces and chewing edges.

Function & use

Mainly used over the gumline to remove salivary calculus and superficial staining before subgingival depuration.

Blades are triangular in cross-section, which protects soft tissue when used correctly and prevents trauma to the gingiva

Many experienced clinicians also use sickles for light subgingival scaling, especially for coarse plaque where curettes are sometimes less effective
