SURGICEL® is an innovative hemostatic material made from oxidized, regenerated cellulose with a low pH value (pH = 4 when dissolved in distilled water). When applied to a bleeding site and saturated with blood, the material transforms into a gel-like clot. The hemoglobin in the red blood cells is converted to hematin, causing SURGICEL® to take on a dark brown to black color, which clearly marks the treated area.
SURGICEL® is completely resorbable and normally breaks down in the body within 7–14 days without leaving any traces or causing significant tissue reactions. Furthermore, the product can be left in the body without risk of infection, as it is bacteriologically safe.
With SURGICEL®, hemostasis can usually be achieved within 2–6 minutes, making it a reliable choice for controlling bleeding in various surgical procedures. This material is frequently used in general surgery, neurosurgery, and dental surgery, where rapid and effective hemostasis is critical.
