Universal curettes - versatile instruments for general depuration
Universal curettes are double-ended periodontal instruments with blades cutting on both sides - designed to be used on all tooth surfaces, both supragingival and subgingival. They are ideal for maintenance treatment by removing biofilm and light to moderate calculus deposits on various tooth surfaces
Function & use
Excellent for routine check-ups and basic depuration - used on both front and back teeth throughout the mouth in routine patients
Effective for removing moderate calculus deposits and soft plaque - both above and below the gum line, especially in pockets up to around 5mm deep
Allows the use of both cutting edges depending on the surface, increasing the reach and flexibility of the instrument
Types & models
Classic models such as Barnhart 5/6, & Columbia 13/14 are widely used due to their well-balanced design and good reach
Some variants have longer or stiffer handles for better access in deeper pockets or narrow areas, such as Langer universal curettes (e.g. 1/2, 17/18) which combine universal blade design with Gracey-type shank bending
These universal curettes are part of the ErgoRazor range
