Resorbable sutures
Resorbable sutures are broken down in the body by hydrolysis after some time. This has the advantage that the sutures do not need to be removed manually. They are often used in surgical procedures where there is a need to avoid post-operative revisits to remove sutures. In the dental context, they are particularly useful in implant surgery, bone augmentation and soft tissue reconstruction.
The sutures are available in both monofilament and braided variants depending on the desired flexibility, tensile strength and tissue support. The degradation time can vary from approximately one week up to several months, depending on the suture type and surgical need. The choice of absorbable suture should always be based on tissue type, healing time and the clinical goal.
