Just like standard Gracey curettes, they are area-specific and adapted for specific tooth surfaces, but the sturdier shaft provides significantly better resistance to bending. This makes it possible to apply higher lateral pressure during scaling and root planing without compromising precision or control.

Rigid Gracey curettes are primarily used in the treatment of patients with heavy subgingival calculus and advanced periodontitis. The range includes, among others, models 11/12 for posterior mesial surfaces and 13/14 for posterior distal surfaces.
