Gracey curettes are area-specific periodontal hand instruments used for subgingival debridement, scaling, and root planing. Unlike universal curettes, each Gracey curette is designed for a specific group of teeth or tooth surface, providing optimal access, high precision, and gentler treatment in periodontal pockets.
The different models are adapted for various clinical situations. Gracey 1/2 and 3/4 are primarily used for anterior teeth; 5/6 is suitable for premolars and anterior surfaces; while 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, and 13/14 are intended for posterior teeth. The later models, 15/16 and 17/18, feature modified shafts that provide improved access to the mesial and distal surfaces of the molars as well as other hard-to-reach areas. By using the correct Gracey curette for each tooth surface, treatment becomes both more effective and more ergonomic.
